What Kind of Student Am I?
There are two types of students enrolled in a Firefighter I/II Recruit School. The students are either department sponsored or self-sponsored.
Admission criteria:
- You must be 18 to enter the course
- High school diploma (or equivalent)
- If using VA benefits, official transcripts must be obtained from all schools attended, including all military transcripts.
- Scanned copy of current valid driver’s license (Faxed copies cannot be accepted)
- Successful completion of CPAT (out of state students must submit AFC CPAT form)
- Proof of health insurance (front and back of card)
- AFC Physical Statement form signed by medical doctor, or such physician’s designee, within the last 12 months
- Background check and drug screen will be completed on the first day of class for self-sponsored students.
- For department personnel, the department’s chief must submit a Notice of Employment form (rev. 2/1/18).
What is a department sponsored student?
Department sponsored students are paid suppression employees of an Alabama fire department. The sponsoring department provides tuition payment, department-issued uniforms for daily wear, and department-issued dress uniform for graduation.
What is a self-sponsored student?
Self-sponsored students are students that are not working as paid suppression employees of a fire department. They must attend the Firefighter I/II Recruit School at the Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa or an AFC Regional Recruit School.
